Inaugural dean of UCI arts school dies at 93

Clayton Garrison was internationally acclaimed choreographer, director

IRVINE, CA (August 7, 2015) – Clayton Garrison, founding dean of the School of Fine Arts at the University of California, Irvine, died July 27 at the age of 93. He was a visionary stage director, choreographer and theater professor who left a lasting imprint on UCI and what’s now known as the Claire Trevor School of the Arts.

Garrison was invited by founding Chancellor Daniel G. Aldrich Jr. to create a “department of arts” in 1964, the year before the campus opened. After committing to Aldrich and leaving UC Riverside, where he had been teaching, Garrison insisted that a single department with the arts lumped together would not suffice for the new university. He devised a plan for a “conservatory within the academy,” which then became the School of Fine Arts, one of UCI’s five original schools.

Irvine, CA (June 16, 2015) -- Welcome to the fourth season of New Swan Shakespeare Festival! The New Swan is a venue unique to Orange County, and indeed to the world of theatre. Our 15-ton, modular mini-Elizabethan theater was a dream of UC Irvine’s Department of Drama in 1965 when the university was founded, and in the winter of 2011 this dream was brought to vivid life. Since the debut of our summer festival in 2012, we have run two classic Shakespearean plays in repertory each year, and last season debuted “Mozart Monday,” which this year has extended to a series of three Monday night music offerings in August.
